Itinerary

DAY 01:

Arrival in Paro – Acclimatization

Arrive at Paro International Airport, where your journey into the Kingdom of Bhutan begins with one of the most spectacular mountain flights in the world. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel.

As this is your first day at altitude (2,200m), activities are kept light to help with acclimatization. Enjoy a relaxed exploration of Paro Valley, visiting:

  • Rinpung Dzong, an impressive 17th-century fortress-monastery overlooking the valley
  • Ta Dzong (National Museum), showcasing Bhutanese art, history, and culture
  • A leisurely walk through Paro town to observe local life

Overnight in Paro.

DAY 02:

The Taktsang Experience (Tiger’s Nest Monastery)

Today you hike to Bhutan’s most iconic landmark, Taktsang Monastery (3,120m), famously known as Tiger’s Nest. The hike takes approximately 4–5 hours round trip and ascends gradually through pine forests adorned with prayer flags. Midway, a cafeteria offers panoramic views of the monastery clinging dramatically to a cliff face 900 meters above the valley floor.

Legend states that Guru Rinpoche flew to this site on the back of a tigress and meditated here in the 8th century, introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. Exploring the monastery provides both spiritual insight and breathtaking scenery. This hike also serves as excellent acclimatization before the trek begins.

Overnight in Paro.

DAY 03:

Paro – Jili Dzong

  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Camp Altitude: 3,480m

The trek begins with a gradual climb through traditional farmhouses and blue pine forests above Paro Valley. The trail ascends steadily along ridgelines offering increasingly expansive views of the valley below. As you gain elevation, the landscape transitions into alpine vegetation. On clear days, you may glimpse snow-capped peaks including Mt. Jomolhari. Camp is set near Jili Dzong, a historic fortress once used to protect Paro from Tibetan invasions. The site offers stunning sunset views over both Paro and Thimphu valleys.

Overnight in camp.

DAY 04:

Jili Dzong – Jangchulakha

  • Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Camp Altitude: 3,770m

Today’s trail follows a scenic ridge through alpine forests of rhododendron and dwarf bamboo. The path undulates gently with gradual ascents and descents, making it one of the more pleasant walking days. You will pass yak herders’ camps and wide-open pastures, with panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas stretching across the horizon.

Camp at Jangchulakha in a broad meadow surrounded by mountains and grazing yaks.

Overnight in camp.

DAY 05:

Jangchulakha – Jimilang Tsho

  • Trekking Time: 4 hours
  • Camp Altitude: 3,870m

The trail continues along high ridges before descending slightly toward the stunning Jimilang Tsho (Sand Ox Lake). This serene alpine lake is known for its crystal-clear waters and large trout.

The surrounding mountains reflect beautifully on the lake’s surface, creating one of the trek’s most picturesque camping locations.

Enjoy a peaceful afternoon soaking in the Himalayan wilderness.

Overnight beside the lake.

DAY 06:

Jimilang Tsho – Simkotra Tsho

  • Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Camp Altitude: 4,090m
  • Highest Pass: Approx. 4,200m

Today you cross the highest point of the trek, climbing gradually to a pass at around 4,200m. The ascent rewards you with dramatic views of snow-capped peaks including Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan’s highest mountain (on clear days).

The trail then descends gently to the exquisite Simkotra Lake, a sacred lake believed to be associated with spiritual legends.

This is the highest camping night of the trek, surrounded by pristine alpine beauty.

Overnight in camp.

DAY 07:

Simkotra Tsho – Phajoding – Thimphu

  • Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Phajoding Altitude: 3,650m

The trail gradually descends toward Phajoding Monastery, perched high above Thimphu Valley. The monastery complex provides sweeping views of Bhutan’s capital city far below.

From Phajoding, continue the descent through forest trails into Thimphu Valley. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for a comfortable rest after completing the trek.

Overnight in Thimphu (2,334m).

DAY 08:

Thimphu – Punakha – Thimphu (Cultural Exploration)

Drive over Dochula Pass (3,100m), marked by 108 memorial chortens and offering panoramic Himalayan views on clear days.

  • Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most magnificent fortress-monasteries located at the confluence of two rivers
  • The Suspension Bridge, one of the longest in Bhutan
  • Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility

Return to Thimphu in the evening.
