The Bumthang Cultural Trek is a short yet enriching 4-day, 3-night trek in Bhutan’s spiritual heartland. While the trekking portion is relatively brief, reaching Bumthang requires a scenic cross-country drive, making the full journey around 10–11 days by road. The itinerary can be shortened by taking domestic flights between Paro and Bumthang. This journey perfectly combines cultural exploration, rural village encounters, sacred monasteries, and moderate trekking through pristine Himalayan landscapes.

Itinerary
Arrival in Paro (2,280m) – Drive to Thimphu
Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be warmly received by your guide and transferred to Thimphu, approximately a one-hour scenic drive following the Paro and Thimphu rivers. After check-in and some rest, begin your introduction to Bhutan’s capital with a visit to Buddha Dordenma, the massive golden statue overlooking the valley and offering panoramic views of Thimphu. Later, visit the National Memorial Chorten, an important religious landmark where locals gather daily to pray and circumambulate. Overnight in Thimphu.
Thimphu Sightseeing & Drive to Punakha (4–5 hrs)
After breakfast, continue exploring Thimphu before driving east toward Punakha. We will be visiting Takin Preserve the National Animal of Bhutan and then Paper Factory. The journey to Punakha takes you across Dochula Pass (3,100m), where 108 chortens stand against a backdrop of the eastern Himalayas on clear days. Descending into the warmer Punakha Valley, visit Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful fortresses, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Later, walk across the nearby suspension bridge for scenic views of the valley and river below. Overnight in Punakha.
Drive to Bumthang via Trongsa (6–7 hrs)
Today is one of the most scenic drives across central Bhutan, with winding mountain roads and ever-changing landscapes. En route, stop at Trongsa Dzong, the largest dzong in the country, dramatically perched above a deep valley and historically linked to Bhutan’s royal family. Visit the Ta Dzong Watchtower Museum, which showcases Bhutan’s history and royal heritage. Continue your journey over Yotong La Pass before descending into the beautiful and spiritually rich Bumthang Valley. Overnight in Bumthang (Jakar).
Bumthang Sightseeing
Bumthang is regarded as the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, home to some of the kingdom’s oldest temples and sacred sites. Visit Jakar Dzong, also known as the “Castle of the White Bird,” overlooking the valley. Continue to Jambay Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan dating back to the 7th century, and Kurjey Lhakhang, a revered monastery associated with Guru Rinpoche. In the evening, meet your trekking crew for a briefing and preparation for the cultural trek beginning the next day. Overnight in Bumthang.
Trek: Bumthang to Ngang Lhakhang (Approx. 2,900m) – 5–6 hrs
After breakfast and a short trek briefing, begin your 5–6 hour trek from Bumthang toward Ngang Lhakhang, following scenic trails through pine forests, open meadows, and traditional villages with beautiful views of the surrounding valleys. Along the way, enjoy a picnic lunch in nature and possible encounters with local villagers and yak herders, offering insight into rural Bhutanese life. Upon arrival at Ngang Lhakhang, visit the historic temple set in peaceful
surroundings before settling into your accommodation for the night and enjoying a warm dinner in the quiet mountain atmosphere.
Trek: Ngang Lhakhang to Ugyenchholing (3,100m) – 6–7 hrs
After breakfast at camp, begin a steady ascent through mixed forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. The trail follows quiet ridgelines with expansive views over the Tang Valley and surrounding Himalayan foothills. As you gain altitude, the landscape opens into high pastures and scattered farmhouses, reflecting the traditional lifestyle of central Bhutan. After crossing gentle passes and descending gradually, arrive at Ugyenchholing (approx. 3,100m), a historic settlement known for the Ugyenchholing Manor, once the ancestral home of a noble family. Camp overnight near the village in a peaceful rural setting.
Trek: Ugyenchholing to Jakar – 5–6 hrs
On the final day of the trek, follow village paths and farmland trails as you gradually descend toward Jakar Valley. The route passes through cultivated fields, small hamlets, and forest patches, offering a closer look at daily life in Bumthang. With clear weather, enjoy scenic views of Jakar Dzong overlooking the valley. Upon reaching the road point near Jakar, meet your vehicle and transfer to your hotel. The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the comfort of your accommodation after completing the Bumthang Cultural Trek. Overnight in Bumthang.
Drive to Punakha (5–6 hrs)
Return drive toward western Bhutan with scenic mountain views.

Punakha Sightseeing & Drive to Par
Morning visit to Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple) and leisure drive back to Paro.
Drive back to Paro via Dochula Pass and make a short stop at the pass. Overnight in Paro.
Tiger’s Nest Hike
Hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (3,120m).
4–5 hours round trip. A rewarding cultural and spiritual highlight of Bhutan.

Departure
